For the present Covid has become less of an issue but all planned events may be subject to change should a flare up occur.
Throughout the year our Group meets on a near monthly basis.
In the Autumn/Winter these are normally inside meetings usually at Tregadillett Community Hall. These include our Annual Honey Competition ,our AGM but also a series of presentations on bee related topics. Recent presentations have been on the Stingless bees of Costa Rica, what the books do not tell you about beekeeping and why bees change their mind, the work of the Cornwall Wildlife Trust, how to treat Varroa and a pictorial record of the wildlife of the Kruger National Park in South Africa. Tea and cake follow with plenty of bee chat.
Usually in January we have our Annual Luncheon, a more formal affair. In recent years we have attended Treguddick Distillery where a talk given by the owner on the production of various alcoholic drinks was followed by a 3 course meal but more typically a roast dinner at one of our local inns or golf clubs fits the bill.
From April onwards it is safe to open up hives so Apiary Visits are arranged. A member will host the rest of the Group and hive inspections are usually followed by a social get together. In August we normally have a Social Barbecue. These are supplemented by other events for example: A Bee Safari involves inviting our Local Bee Inspector to visit as many member apiaries as possible. Members follow on as the Bee Inspector dispenses advice and his/her wisdom. A Group trip to Buckfast Abbey gave us an insight into the world of Brother Adam and the beekeeping monks that live there.
We also attend a number of Shows to promote beekeeping and sell honey:
The Whitsun May bank holiday weekend The Launceston Steam and Vintage Rally.
The Royal Cornwall Show in early June
The Launceston Agricultural Show usually on a Thursday towards the end of July
The Callington Honey Fair on the last Saturday of September.
In late Autumn the West Cornwall Beekeeping Association team up with the Cornwall Beekeeping Association to organise a Bit Of A Do or BOAD at a venue near Truro. A series of top quality presentations by national beekeeping experts is provided over the day.
Throughout the Spring and Summer subject to the weather we provide twice weekly opportunities to attend our most experienced beeker members Apiary. Under their expert guidance less experienced members can open and manipulate hives . This practical learning is invaluable but it also provides the ideal opportunity to ask questions about their own bees.
